Next BCMG Board Meeting will take place 3-5pm on Thu, Sep 20, at 3355 Cherry Ridge 78230. If you are interested in placing items on the agenda, email President Grace Emery by Thu, Sep 13.  And, all members are welcome to observe the meetings; however, in order to accommodate seating, please email President Grace Emery that you will be attending.

Ruby Zavala needs two volunteers to help prepare binders and supplies for the upcoming  Teachers Training Class on Fri, Sep 7, from 1:30-4:40pm and Tue, Sep 11 from 11:30am-4:30pm the the AgriLife Office. Email Ruby if you have questions. Sign-up on VMS!

Just Announced!  Rainwater Harvesting for Healthy Lawns and Healthy Waters will be held at SARA, 100 E. Guenther St, on Fri, Sep 21, from 11am-4pm. Free. 4 CEUs. Register online.



We Need You on the 2019 BCMG Board of Directors

The Board of Directors approved a board policy creating a Nominations Committee to seek Master Gardeners to fill positions on the Board of Directors. The Immediate Past President will chair the committee with the two most recent past presidents who are available to participate as members. In addition, two members of the general membership who have broad participation in Master Gardener programs will be asked to participate as members.

Elections will be held at the November monthly meeting with the new Board announced at the December Christmas Party.

All board positions – President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Director/Membership and two At-Large positions – are available. The incumbents of some board positions will seek re-election; others will not.

If you are interested in discussing board service in a position of your choice, please contact Jack Downey at (210) 771-7312 or [email protected] to place your name in consideration or obtain answers to any of your questions.

The Bexar County Youth Gardens Program Needs Your Help!!
School is starting again and we have many schools looking for youth activities to enhance their garden programs. Need 1-2 volunteers each event to take turns with Ruby Zavala in presenting the youth activity. Training will be provided. Vol Code: 980e School Gardens

Where: Crestview Elementary Science Day in the Park, 7710 Narrow Pass, Live Oak, Texas
Info: Youth Activity = plant parts, parts of a seed, parts of a flower, and parts of a leaf. A rotation with 20 kids in each group will be conducted 5 times; Ruby and volunteer will take turns giving presentation.

Monarch Festival at the Pearl Plant Sale has two sign-up shifts on VMS for Sun, Oct 21. Help get plants unloaded, set up BCMG tents & tables, and sell plants in the morning.  The afternoon shift has sales, taking down tents & tables, loading unsold plants, and clean-up. Help Molly Keck! A Spanish-Speaking Volunteer  is needed to provide two educational programs on kitchen pests for AVANCE parenting classes on Mon, Oct 29 and a third class on Wed, Oct  31.  Molly can review the presentation with you, and provide additional information and training.  Very simple IPM philosophy of identifying the pest, sanitation and exclusion.  Props and real pantry pests for show also available.  Please email Molly Keck if interested.

Landscape Design School: Series XXVI, Course I will be held Mon-Tue, Sep 24-25, at George the Bush Presidential Library and Museum, 1000 George Bush Drive W, College Station, 77845. Fee:  $165. MGs: 12 CEUs.  Code: 001. These courses offer an opportunity to learn from professional landscape architects and horticulturists about how successful landscapes are designed. Taking all 4 parts of this course earns 48 CEUs and qualifies Master Gardeners for the designation of “Landscape Design Steward.”   More information, registration form, and agenda online.

Texas Fruit Conference returns Mon-Tue, Oct 15-16, for its 7th educational program for Texas fruit growers at the City of New Braunfels Civic Convention Center, 375 S. Castell Avenue, New Braunfels. Early-Bird registration is $65/per person by Sep 15th. Details will be available online.

Texas Superstar Plant Specialist Training will be hosted by Smith County from 18-20 Sep in Tyler. [Note: San Antonio will probably host his course in 2019 or 2020.] Greenhouse Management class will be hosted by Tarrant County MGs Oct 18-20 in Ft Worth.  Composter training will take place Dec 5-7, and will be  hosted by Fort Bend County in Rosenberg, TX.

The Well Informed” Texas Well Owner Network (TWON) program is an education program that gives well owners the opportunity to have their well water samples screened for common contaminants.  Texas A&M AgriLife Extension will be hosting this event in September. Pick up your water sample container by Sep 17 if you wan to participate!
