Volunteer for the 2019 BCMG Board of Directors

The Board of Directors approved a board policy creating a Nominations Committee to seek Master Gardeners to fill positions on the Board of Directors. The Immediate Past President will chair the committee with the two most recent past presidents who are available to participate as members. In addition, two members of the general membership who have broad participation in Master Gardener programs will be asked to participate as members.

Elections will be held at the November monthly meeting with the new Board announced at the December Christmas Party.

All board positions – President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Director/Membership and two At-Large positions – are available. The incumbents of some board positions will seek re-election; others will not.

If you are interested in discussing board service in a position of your choice, please contact Jack Downey at (210) 771-7312 or [email protected] to place your name in consideration or obtain answers to any of your questions.

  SIGN-UP for VOLUNTEER EVENTS using the Event Calendar in theVOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – VMS. Find number of volunteers still needed, who has signed up, Project Code and even request an event reminder!

Five volunteers are needed from 9am-3pm on Sat, Oct 20 at SABOT, 555 Funston Pl, 78209 to help at youth activity stations (cochineal, cricket races, veggies and insects, maggot art, and mealworms) for the Incredible Edible Bug Event.

Monarch Butterfly & Pollinator Festival Youth Activity needs three volunteers per shift (8am-12pm and 12pm-3pm) to help the kiddos make a butterfly life cycle bracelet at The Pearl, 303 Pearl Pkwy, 78215, on Sun, Oct 21.

Share your love of gardening with the gardeners of tomorrow by volunteering at the Children’s Vegetable Garden Program at Phil Hardberger Park (PHP), Tuesdays, 8-11 a.m, Now thru Dec 4.  You can also help by volunteering for the watering team. For more information, email Kathy Breniman.

Texas Fruit Conference returns Mon-Tue, Oct 15-16, for its 7th educational program for Texas fruit growers at the City of New Braunfels Civic Convention Center, 375 S. Castell Avenue, New Braunfels. Greenhouse Management class will be hosted by Tarrant County MGs Oct 18-20 in Ft Worth.  Composter training will take place Dec 5-7, and will be  hosted by Fort Bend County in Rosenberg, TX.

BCMGs & Friends of BCMG:  Bexar County Master Gardners is now an approved non-profit in the USAA Serves giving program.  Your donations to BCMG through USAA Serves can be matched dollar-for-dollar through this program up to a designated limit.

   Incredible Edible Bug Event on Sat, Oct 20 from 10am-2pm at SABOT:  Small bite insect-based food samples, family activities (Cricket Races, Painting with Cochineal, and Face Painting) and Planting for Pollinators Presentation, 1:30 to 2pm, included with admission. Four-course, chef-demonstrated tastings at 10:30am and Noon are $25 per adult, $10 per child.

SAT, OCT 6th INVITATION FROM A FELLOW MG!

There are too few opportunities to learn about succulents and cacti.  For that reason, Eva and I want to open our landscape on Saturday, October 6 for an afternoon tour (1-3pm) of what is possible right here in San Antonio.

Malcom Beck was a mentor of mine.  He encouraged all gardeners, and myself, to share their experiences, both the successes and the learned failures.  He thought one cannot know these things by one’s self…that these are part of the natural order for all to experience/learn.

Please come for a walk through our display gardens, maybe even peek in the greenhouses.  We hope we can inspire more folks to take up an interest in our favorite plants. Come tour a 30+ year succulent landscape in the making at the home of Marty & Eva Ruona.
