BCMG October Monthly Meeting – The Bulb Hunter: A Story Seeking Out Botanical Treasures

October 21, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

October BCMG Seminar and Meeting
Thursday, October 21, 2021
1:00 – 3:00 PM
Hosted by Bexar County Master Gardeners

Topic:  The Bulb Hunter: A Story Seeking Out Botanical Treasures

Bulb collecting adventures turn into a life-altering quest, as Chris searches for heirloom bulbs across the South.  After graduating from TX A&M with a horticulture degree, Chris finds himself living in a little red cabin by a lake, farming bulbs, and growing in life and plant knowledge.  This talk shares the stories of collecting, conveys valuable horticulture knowledge of bulbs, offers ideas and examples for using bulbs in the landscape, and delights the listener with a journey filled with beautiful forgotten places.

Speaker:  Chris Wiesinger

From NY Times Feature Article, July 6, 2006:  Mr. Wiesinger makes a living finding pretty things in ravaged places.  In 2004 he started the Southern Bulb Company with the aim of reintroducing flowers long out of vogue, committing himself exclusively to those that have ably asserted themselves against the particular cruelties of exceedingly hot weather for decades, even centuries.”  Since the New York Times story of his life, Chris has been known nationally as “The Bulb Hunter.”  What started as a personal passion and college project turned into a lifestyle and profitable business.  His many books, publications and unique bulbs are available for purchase online.

The meeting is free and open to the public.
The business portion of the meeting will begin immediately after the conclusion of the presentation.
