Texas Grasses: Natural History, Evolution and Use in Landscapes

November 9, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am

Professor Kelly Lyons will help you understand the essential role grasses play in our ecosystems and landscapes.  She will discuss the morphology of dicot flowers and compare this structure to that of grasses, adding insight into the evolution of grass species and their role in prairie ecosystems.  She will also highlight other non-grass monocots and discuss the value and use of native grasses in residential landscapes.  Examples of some of the more commercially available grass species will be on hand.  Participants will take a walk in the garden and learn to recognize species in a naturalistic setting.

Instructor:  Dr. Kelly Lyons – Professor, Department of Biology, Trinity University; President, Society for Ecological Restoration, Texas Chapter
