Volunteer Opportunities

After completion of your MG Training Class, you will volunteer along side certified Master Gardeners to provide educational opportunities to the home gardeners of Bexar County. While not a complete list, here are some of the volunteer opportunities available to Bexar County Master Gardeners and Master Gardener Interns:

AgriLife Extension Plant Trials – Assist with the plant trials conducted by Bexar County AgriLife Extension by planting, maintaining, and harvesting of tomatoes, peppers, melons, Texas Superstars and more. This is one of the oldest and largest test trials in the state.

Ask a Master Gardener/Plant Clinics – Staff a resource table/booth at a community event (Zoo Boo, SAWS Spring Bloom, Monarch Festival, Festival of Flowers, Earth Day events, etc.) answering gardening questions from the community.

Committee Support – Assist in a committee for hospitality, awards, scholarship, finance, and more.

Communications Teams – Serve as a Communications Team member. Volunteers help put out our internal weekly email to the membership, write articles for our monthly Scion newsletter for the gardening community, help publicize our events, assist with updating our BCMG website and more.

Children Vegetable Garden Program – Mentor children as they plant, maintain, and harvest their crops in this 16-week program offered at both the San Antonio Botanical Garden and Phil Hardberger Park.

Culinary Garden Docent Program – Answer visitor’s questions within the San Antonio Botanical Gardens Culinary Gardens.

CULTIVATE! – Earth-Friendly Gardening and Landscape workshops and more. This is a fun, educational Master Gardener sponsored event held each spring and fall. Volunteer opportunities include presenting workshops, volunteering in the resource area answering gardening questions, working the plant sale, and more.

FaceBook Team – Providing gardening information and event announcements to the community. Volunteers can serve as moderators, editors and administrators.

Hotline Team – Answering a wide variety of gardening questions from home gardeners via phone and email.

San Antonio Rodeo and Livestock Expo – This is our largest event in terms of both time and volunteer needs. Master Gardeners help construct the Little Buckaroom Barn in the Fairgrounds of the San Antonio Rodeo during January. For the 18 days in February when the rodeo is taking place, Master Gardeners serve as greeters, give school tours, assist with children’s activities and run our largest plant sale, all while answering gardening questions from the public. All Master Gardeners, and Interns, are expected to support this event!

Speakers Bureau – Volunteer to serve as a presenter, an assistant to a presenter, a new program developer, or assist with helping with the coordination between the organizations who need a speaker and the members of the Speakers Bureau Team.
